Finding an adopted person or a birth parent is time consuming, heartwrenching, complicated... the list could go on and on. Here are a few suggestions I have.
For ANYTHING. Whether it's your search, your friend, mother, brother. When you are dealing with this, it's filled with emotion and it's not always rational. Don't expect the fantasy reunion so if/when it does/doesn't happen, you won't be let down.
From my experience, adoption can be a four letter word and something that leads to various family issues. The adoptive family may be supportive, but the birth family may not want anything to do with you, or your search.
Unlike most other records in all states, adoption records are sealed in the majority of states. They can be opened by court order which usually means convincing a judge with a valid reason, other states have registries, it just depends on the law. States that do have open access include Kansas.
There's only so much you, or a trained investigator can do. You can search, find all of the information, but it's not up to you, it's up to them to respond and accept your search, to meet, have a relationship. If they do, wonderful! If they don't, accept it, then respect their wishes. In the end, you did all you could.
